I attempted to have a jolly-downtown-Wellington-flaneur sort of day, but was stymied by the first Truly Horribly Cold weather. More, my verdict on my new wood stove is that it's great for afternoon into evening/night heating. But I need secondary heating for my bedroom, and to keep from freezing if I'm splitting up my day and leaving the house. I foresee a lot more morning-scheduled activity so I can come home and start up the fire. Also, I need an ash bucket.

The cold makes me hungry. This donut personality analysis. had my attention. I was distressed - my favorites are chocolate frosted, maple, and boston cream, and the boston cream personality is a bit creepy. Plus, I have been known to haughtily decline to buy any donut if none of the ones I liked were available - I don't know if that's on the same spectrum as 'sob inconsolably'.

In Wellington, we have neither a Dunkin' Donuts nor a Krispy Kreme. Dunkin' Donuts has a presence in Auckland - malls only, and the cultural thing of "bring Munchkins to work" hasn't caught on here. For Wellington, the peculiar corollary to this is that many Wellingtonians crave Dunkin' Donuts. One of my co-workers has an empty Dunkin' Donuts box on his desk, such is his craving.

I have yet to see a donut in Wellington that looked edible.

Are there any?

I have never been a fan of the crispy creme brand... I find them cloyingly sweet and not dense enough. Dunkin's will do, but there was a Cambodian owned donut shop that I miss every now and then...

Perhaps I shall make apple fritters soon!

My Wellington donut sources:

#1: Mediterranean Food Warehouse cafe, in Newtown. On Saturday mornings only, they make Italian potato donuts. My, they're good, in a cake-donut sugared-ring Italian way.

#2: New World Thorndon. Somehow they have very fresh frosted cake donuts in the morning, and this freshness is what makes them worthy. Sold individually, near the bread rolls.

#3: New World Courtney Place. Has a deal with Satan to provide big, slightly greasy, yeast-raised donuts. The "American Donut" is a circular slab of yeast donut with chocolate frosting and sprinkles. It's a heart attack in a paper bag, i.e., tastes like donut home.

Happy donut hunting!

I pine for Dunkin Donuts still. :( We share the same favourite, too! I tried to inculcate Mundens in the Donut cult but the Dunkin Donuts from Auckland airport were not the best ever. Strangely, we have one place in Christchurch that does a passable imitation and we had a Winchells which seemed very successful until it closed down.

I also live in hope that Dreamy Donuts - the Australian donut which is reputed to be superior to any of the other chains (and I see they make their chocolate donuts with lindt chocolate so that bodes well). http://www.dreamydonuts.com/default.asp?PageID=71

I used to like one in Thailand that was called American Donut or something but it was second to Dunkin Donuts. The best Dunkin Donuts ever were in Singapore and the worst in Auckland. Go figure.

*coffs* now that I have outed myself as another donut obsessive... Ill also out myself as a general sweet toothed food lover and comment that I miss Swensens also!!! *grin*

<3 - awesome user pic Danjite!

Yes, the ones in Auckland lacked that certain je ne sais pas. Seeing a donut downgraded to a mall snack is a sad thing.

I have a two-edged sword regarding sweet things that I miss from the US of A. One is that many of them are easy to make. The evil side of that is that then I have a whole batch of...whatever...(ice cream, cookies, etc.) there to tempt me, when I should just have a serving. Or two.

Dunkin' Donuts is so relentless in New England that it seems there's one on every corner and in every grocery store. I'd gladly sent a few to you.

It's odd, I don't really miss them that much. Donuts certainly aren't health food. But I liked knowing they were there, you know?

Maybe a small electric space heater would work for your bedroom? They are a lot more energy efficient (not to mention safer) than they used to be.

No Dunkin' Donuts? So much for the myth that American culture has penetrated everywhere! I take it you'll pick up a few when you go back to Auckland for your vacation. :)

Er, yes, I will. I may even do a run past a certain mall on my way out of town to pick up some for Wellington friends.

No Dunkin Donuts here, and nearest Krispy Kreme a good 3 and a half to 4 hours drive.

I think you'll need a small heater for the bedroom, to stop from freezing overnight.

You don't need DD or KK. Somewhere in downtown Lower Hutt, back in a twisted alley off a major street that has a newspaper box, are REAL donuts hot out of the oil. I used to accompany/sub for a friend who stocked the newspaper boxes downtown with the evening paper. OK, so that was about 1975-76 (they hadn't finished building the Wanganui Computer Center yet...), but surely, it's still there. And the donuts - truly, they were doughnuts, with all the letters, no contractions - were the best ever. The stand in Pike Place Market selling mini-donuts hot and freshly shaken in a paper bag with cinnamon sugar was the closest I've had since. (OK, so that was around 1990, but I'm hoping they're still there, not shut down by anti-fried-food advocates.)

Go hunting and report back. I want to think that at least one fond childhood memory of mine from somewhere I lived in the world still exists!

I think your donuts are but a memory, I'm afraid - along with the Kiwi "evening paper." They do have hot fresh minidonuts at markets and things, under the name "Li'l Orbits", and these are, admittedly, the crack.
