That was a long strange weekend. Friday, I got a call that my LOL was in the hospital - and not expected to leave. After hospital visits on Friday and Saturday, I went and emceed a Dr. Sketchy, which induced some cognitive dissonance. Then, her family called early Sunday to say that she had died on Saturday night.

Well...she didn't have to go live in the hospital wing; her family and friends got to say goodbye; at the end, a picture of her husband was tucked up in her hospital bed with her.

Here she was in happier days, when she still lived in her flat in Stokes Valley and had her cat Tyger. Who is hopefully waiting for her where she is going.

Me? I'm OK; I shed my tears on Sunday morning and then, fortunately, spent the day in the company of friends. Planning a little break from volunteering, until the end of October.

I've been lurking on your journal so I knew about your LOL. I just wanted to give you a hug for this incredible volunteer job you did. I hope it doesn't sound too cheesy, but I think this is what makes the world a better place. You rock!

I'm very sorry for your loss. But I can't help think that it must be easier knowing that you got to help her in so many little ways.

YAY!!!

I think what I'll do after a break is volunteer at the Wesleyhaven old folks' home where my LOL was living. They need volunteers to do pretty much what I was doing, except for lots of different people, and I grew fond of some of the old folks there who I saw when I went to visit her.

:D

Once in a while I go to Mother Joseph Care Center and play and sing for the "grandmas & grandpas," as my daughter called them... I need to do that more frequently. <3

I'm so sorry, but glad you were able to make her final months happy ones. You've inspired me to make weekly visits to my grandmother, who is not doing well. It makes me feel better to know I'm making her happy like you did with your LOL.

-big hug- My visits weren't always perfect; sometimes she'd be tired or unwell, or I wouldn't have anything particularly interesting. And other times we'd hit a sweet spot of conversation, as you do.

I'm sorry; it's tough to lose someone you care about. She does seem to have died as good a death as anyone can hope for, at least.

I really admire you. Befriending that lady is one of the bravest things I've ever heard of. And I'm glad that it was wuick, and she was saved the hospital wing and got to say her goodbyes and all. It's a comforting way of passing. I'm sending hugs and again my admiration.

It makes me sad to hear about her passing, but I'm glad she did not have to go and live in the hospital wing.
Thank you for sharing the photo!

Good travels, LOL...

Just catching up on a weeks worth of LJ news.

I'm sorry to hear about the LOL as well. Sounds like it was quick and smooth(ish) in the end.

I think the plan for a few months break is probably a good one. But volunteering and connecting is good for the soul too. So keep going in the long run (in whatever capacity suits you). Reflect. Engage.

It seems odd, glib, and slightly twee to type to someone I've only met once in limited circumstances, but I'm proud of(?), maybe for(?) you. It remains true though. Well done to both you and your LOL.
