Today it snowed for real. The snow of my dreams! The picture from Sunday looks sad compared to what's behind the cut...

Now THIS, ladies and gentlemen, is backyard snow

I KNOW, RIGHT???

Actual snow on my actual street

Everybody else was holding either a camera or a snowball.

Wintah Wondahland

After taking these pictures, I walked down to the dairy. Whole families were out traipsing and slipping through the snow. On my way back, I ran across one of my neighbors and her three children, equipped with boogie boards. They were going to try and find somewhere to slide on the boards as substitute sleds. So I said, "Well, there's a slope in my backyard, come on over!" The three children had never sledded before, but they did get the hang of it, in between making snow angels. Once the pristine snow was flattened and trampled, we had a snowball fight. The smallest child, seeing me deftly scoop up the snow, asked, "Can I have a big snowball please?"

"What do you say?" prompted his mother.

"Thank you?" he said, to me. Rather charmed, I gave him a huge snowball. Then, he threw it at his mom.

I immediately gave him another.

A lovely dusting! Makes everything look so beautiful, doesn't it? :)

I've put all my snowy icons away because it's mid summer here!

It was about three inches deep - another 2 - 3 inches would have made for better sledding. Oh well!

It looks wonderful - beautiful and just the right amount. I have to say, as a northern-hemisphere resident in the height of a very hot summer, it seems bizarre that it could be snowing anywhere. Yes I know, your weather is opposite of ours usually, but intellectually my mind is just balking at the possibility.

Oh, that's AWESOME. And congrats for supplying the neighbor kids with snowballs. Did you teach them how to make some?

The two older kids were fine and flinging snow around like naturals. The littlest one was little - about two and a half - and his motor skills weren't quite there.

Wow! That looks freaky! (Also lovely - you house looks like it came from a sentimental Christmas card.)

Good for you, introducing the neighbor kids to the joys of a proper snowball fight.

I bet there have been a lot of car accidents in Wellington, with everyone suddenly having to learn how to drive through the white stuff. Maybe you can make some money moonlighting as a driving instructor? :D

There's been accidents, and people falling over. What's really vexing is when people live up or down tall staircases or vertiginous hills. Nobody would put houses in these locations if snow happened regularly.

So if this is the start of a new Wellington weather pattern, a lot of real estate's going to lose value very quickly! Here's hoping this snowfall was just a freak event.

I am very sad that I missed all of the snow. On the other hand, I was sitting on a beach in Hawaii instead.
