Quiet bookish weather continues
Jul. 27th, 2007 10:57 amA quiet week – busy at work and the gym - enlivened by the arrival of
orca_girl, visiting
sazabhadri all the way from Boston. She was swamped with jet lag when I saw her last night, but she very kindly stayed vertical while I nattered away. She brought me an armload of books, conveyed to her by
tafkarfanfic during her LA layover, (at last, I have Kushiel’s Justice) and, courtesy of her and
raqs, I now own a FURminator.
Where has the FURminator been all my life? This cat-grooming device has already had a massive impact on my household, my cat Northey, and me. Northey enjoys being groomed with this thing to a disturbing degree. Over a half hour, I removed about a liter of cat hair from her – cat hair that won’t wind up on my floor or furniture in the notorious Maine Coon spring moult. It was, as
raqs said, a magical cat hair explosion, so much so that I had to run the FURminator over my own clothes when I was done. Northey now looks like a Maine Coon poster child and, freed of her winter undercoat, is positively frisky.
This week I was reading a lively travelogue of Paraguay, which was interesting from an expat's perspective. As emigrant destinations go, Paraguay is at the bottom of the barrel, and tales of its human flotsam and jetsam were very entertaining. The country may have seen more immigrant failures than anywhere else, along with some successes they might not have wanted (it was the final refuge of Dr. Mengele, for example).
Yeah, I'm staying home with books, and there are reasons - mostly that I'm fed up with small talk with acquaintances, in contrast to real talk with solid friends, and with the semi-artificial socializing of clubs and Internet dating. Enh.
