A U.S. diplomat who quit because he couldn’t ethically support the war on Iraq. Incidentally, anti-war protests in NZ continued for a month after the war began. I am simply burned out, feeling ambivalent upon seeing images of people released from dungeons, and deeply uneasy at the anti-U.N. precedent that has been set.
For all its current shotgun imperialism, the U.S. doesn’t have the culture to be an empire builder. Some opinions on that and some stuff I found interesting about Americans living overseas at the NY Times Magazine, which requires a free registration.
And, to follow, a poem by Robert Graves that sounds like it's about the fanfic phenomenon of Mary Sue, of all things - elevated through his Goddess-worshipping vision. How nice, if every dreamy fanfic-writing girl went on to have a boyfriend who would write something like this. The poem follows complete.
