Steampunk PWNED
Oct. 19th, 2009 09:49 amI’ve got two friends having birthdays soon who both enjoy steampunk. So I thought that, if I could get some clock gears, I could make some necklaces as gifts for them.
Last week, running errands in Lower Hutt – where many old-fashioned stores and shops hang on in now-obscure neighborhood shopping strips– I saw a clock repair shop. Perfect.
I went in and stopped cold. Belying its humble location, this clock repair shop was full of high-end Art Deco and antique clocks. Most of the timepieces on display cost more than I make in a week, and all the staff were old enough to be a parent or grandparent of mine.
A white-haired Scottish lady asked if she could be of any assistance. I asked if they had any extra clock gears that perhaps they weren’t, well…for making jewelery, you know…um…did they?
She fixed me with a withering glare. “We use anything like that to repair the clocks.”
I slunk away.
