Some Politics
Oct. 17th, 2003 10:52 pmAll this LJ defense-of-marriage-protest stuff is quite good, inspiring, pleasant, nice to see folks support my right to meet the nice Jewish FTM doctor of my dreams, etc. (Talking to some friends, we decided that's the perfect partner for me, but that's another story.) I haven't yet seen anyone make the observation that the dubious marriage-honoring week sponsored by the U.S. government is a good reason to go out and vote, so I'll say it; don't just have it be the meme of the week. Go vote.
What's up politically down under? It all seems to be on hold for the World Cup rugby games. The Green Party here has doubled its support because the NZ government has opened the door to genetically modified organisms under controlled circumstances, a change from the recent GE-free policy. And I'm about to write in response to a request for citizen input about a proposed new law in the Auckland area. In response to prostitution being legalized, some people are saying "Not in MY backyard" and trying to force through legislation banning anything but brothels in industrial areas in Auckland or in the skanky part of downtown. Nice and disempowering for the sex workers - especially independent operators working from their own homes. I shall be writing to protest this. At least they're asking for our input.
