Back! I’m still not caught up on e-mail or housework, but RL managed to be even more loopy than I’d planned – it’s been like this all week. All month. A magical realism month. I have determined that LOTR costume stuff, as much as I love it, brings me to the quivering edge of fandom burnout much more than any bad story or fanfiction-related brouhaha. Possibly I overdosed on the costume side over the past few months. There’s just so…much…detail. Not that there’s not a fanfiction-side thing that’s bothering me, which I may rant about tomorrow.

The ready.gov site is now up, telling Americans what to do in the event of terrorist attack, and so are the parody sites. Place your beverage away from your monitor!

Everyone was complaining about the America’s Cup yacht racing being cancelled for a week and more. I assure you the weather in Auckland has been utterly atrocious the entire time. Today, the worst weather day yet, the wind met their arcane criteria and the yachts raced. The mast on the NZ boat broke, so of course the Swiss won. People are talking about the final race tomorrow…skeptical, but probably accurate.

In my fandom break, I read Witi Ihemara’s novel Nights in the Gardens of Spain. I recommend it. I haven’t been this emotionally swamped by a book in a long time, all for personal reasons. It’s a gay love story and a heterosexual divorce story and a story about what casual sex can mean to and do for someone. Reminded me of Stone Butch Blues with its heart-rending qualities. Also, this book was written from a top’s perspective, which I enjoyed as a change. Most slash seems to focus on the bottom, either being from the bottom’s perspective, or with the top so obsessively focused on the bottom that the top’s ostensible perspective is obscured.
