Dish and Dishes
Jan. 11th, 2003 03:58 pmIt's very irritating that, of all magazines in the world, New Zealand magazines seem to have the least online presence. Which makes sense from the point of view of actually getting people to pay for the magazines, but it makes it hard to share tidbits. I just found an article about Craig Parker today, in the February issue of a magazine called NEXT.
Craig says he can't get by without:"Art, books, barbecues, CJ(his boyfriend), cell phones, chardonnay, chicken, credit cards, email, family, friends, going out, gossip, laughter, lying on the couch, movies, music, my Mac, occasional employment, Ponsonby(an Auckland neighborhood), SPQR (a Ponsonby cafe), stage management, sex, shopping, summer, taxis, theatre, water..." A very Auckland list IMHO. SPQR is a restaurant about 10 minutes from where I live, tres chic, modern Italian. Locally we call it "Straights Pay Queers Rule" because it's a) very overpriced and b) a big gay hangout.
Went out to brunch with some friends who are about to move out of their apartment and onto their boat, a small...uh...sailing craft (I don't think it's a full-blown yacht). We wound up talking about chocolate-covered ants, of all things. "I can't believe they smother the ant in a block of chocolate," said the main sailor. "I'd like little ants in a thin chocolate shell so I could pop a bunch in my mouth."
"Now with more insect goodness?" I said. "Like peanut M&Ms?"
"Yeah, exactly. They'd be more nutritious!" We then talked about how many pieces of cockroach, bug, rat hair et al. are allowed in chocolate and peanut butter by food safety laws. Then my friends decided they were hungry and ordered more food. If your appetite has been whetted as well, check out this page, which has an article about chocolate-covered ants and insects as food. It deals with the important question; why are chocolate-covered ants not the gourmet staple they once were?
