-biggest sigh ever- Put down that glass of water: it's safe on any surface, now. I had my cat Northey euthanized yesterday afternoon.

She was still under the shade of the tree ferns where you in LJ land last saw her. At 3 PM, I'd gone out to check on her, and her breathing was harsh and labored, open-mouthed gasping. After two phone calls, we were on our way to the after-hours vet. A painful hour and a failed oxygen treatment later, she was dead in my arms.

Everyone is being really, really nice to me, considering that this is a cat that died after 13 very-cared-for years. Even her death expenses are mitigated for me by her cat health insurance. I find myself re-reading Jilly Cooper, sappy fiction where it's OK for characters to dissolve into endless tears over their dead animals.

It's ok for people in real life to dissolve into endless tears over their dead animals too. I do it regularly.

I'm so sorry. I remember Northey very fondly from my visits to you. She was the best of felines.

I'm deeply touched that you feel that way. Especially because you're allergic...and Northey was always a highly-allergy-inducing cat...quick, come visit me while I'm cat-free!

My condolences for your loss. I'm glad you found her early on, and she was able to pass relatively painlessly. As [livejournal.com profile] tatjna says, real people cry too. Love's like that.

I'm so sorry. It's never something easy to go through, but knowing when to do what's best for them is often the hardest part. I think it gets harder when they HAVE been your companion for so long.

I know I will be dissolving in endless tears when it's Emily's time, something I don't want to think about happening for many years yet. (But I'm constantly paranoid about cancer.) Hell, I'm tearing up now just thinking about it... time to go distract myself.

*hugs*

Weirdly, I wasn't paranoid about cancer - but it looks like that's what it was. Either that or a Maine Coon specific heart disease that her sire may have died of.

Be good to your cat girl on my behalf!

I'm so, so sorry. It never gets any easier, maybe a good cathartic cry is the best thing for you right now. It's certainly justified.

Oh hon, I am so sorry. Northey had a great life and contributed much to yours. I know what it's like when it's just the two of you for a while and one has to go away. But you made Northey famous! She will be much remembered.

From: [identity profile] tyellas.livejournal.com
Famous? As with the posts on my Little Old Lady, that wasn't the idea so much as posting about Important Interesting Thing In My Life. And then you all got interested too. Northey was also amusingly photogenic - the Internet Is Made Of Cats, after all. I was going to post more pictures, but, tears.

With everything occurring on planet Earth right now* my grief over a pet animal is a pebble in the sea of greater happenings. But it's my pebble, and I'll carry it a long way.

* For example, the same day Northey died, we had an election in NZ and the conservatives won, which is such bad news some folks I know are taking a news vacation to keep from exploding. I had voted, by the way.

So sorry to hear that you grand dame has left you. Somehow seeing you without her popping up for some attention will be different.

She had a great cared for and lovely long life, still it is sad. I know you will miss her, and her purring in your lap. I will miss her too in my own way.

*big hugs*

It's never wrong to cry over the death of someone you love. I still miss my cat Mog, who died aged 16 in similar circumstances in 2008. One of the hardest things about leaving our old house for usuakari and I was that that was where we buried her, wrapped in my cardigan.
Northey looks like a beautiful cat from her glamour shot, by the way. You've always got to watch the tortiseshells. :)
